The Liverpool versus Manchester city rivalry will only add spice to the contest in what was a fight of the year last time when Liverpudlian Mathews seized the British title on Crolla’s home soil. It’s the commonwealth title on the line this time round and the Manchester man will be out for revenge.
Mathews will have the home support advantage in what will be a raucous atmosphere. ‘Dirty Derry’ is the taller fighter who fights from range and will look to impose the spiteful right uppercuts that landed so successfully last time. He has been defeated by Gavin Rees and the unbeaten Terry Flannigan since that fight to blight his progress but has come back with two wins.
Anthony ‘million dollar’ Crolla by nature is a front foot, body puncher but will have to be harder to hit this time round and better defensively with more head and lateral movement. He hurt his opponent to the body a number of times and will be looking to land those penetrating hooks to a bigger more devastating effect on Saturday night. One thing is for sure, he certainly won’t be underestimating his opponent as in the last fight he was facing an underdog in Derry Mathews.
It’s a 50-50 fight if ever there was one and if it’s fought at the same frenetic intensity as last time stamina will certainly come into play in the late rounds if it goes that far. Mathews may just come out on top again if he reproduces the boxing ability, utilises the ring and keeps off the ropes.
