George Groves returns to action at the Liverpool Echo Arena on November 22nd as he defends his WBC Silver super middleweight title against American challenger Denis Douglin.
Groves has the status as the mandatory challenger for the WBC world title currently held by American Andre Direll after winning the WBC Silver title against Frenchman Christopher Rebrasse in his last outing at Wembley Arena. A loss in this fight though, would mean that he would lose that all important status and his aspirations for another world title shot would be put firmly on hold.
However the Hammersmith boxer is keen to stay active and sharpen his skills ahead of a potential WBC title showdown with Direll by taking on American southpaw Denis Douglin. Douglin is an opponent who Groves needs to be beating if he is to win a world title. He has two knockout losses, one against Jermell Charlo- who will be challenging for the WBO light middleweight title in December, as well as unheard of journeyman Doel Carasquillo.
Groves will have to deal with Douglin’s southpaw stance but it should provide a good warm up test as Andre Direll is also a Southpaw fighter. ‘Saint’ George will be looking to regain his conviction against fringe level opposition and get back to the form he showed before the Froch encounters. He has all the tools to win the fight in good fashion but will have to have done his due diligence though as fighters will be out to test him after seeing the manner in which he lost against Froch in the second clash.
