The World Championships of snooker starts on Saturday and reigning champion Ronnie O Sullivan has been installed as pre-tournament favourite.
The rocket has taken a long time off out of the game this season having not played a competitive match since last May. You could say fear of the unknown has propelled him to favourite, however, everyone knows what could happen should O Sullivan play anywhere near his best.
O Sullivan’s preparation for the tournament has however included practising with the likes of Peter Ebdon and Judd Trump and you certainly wouldn’t expect him to be in Sheffield to make up the numbers. Fuelled by Barry Hearns’ comments, The Rocket will not be one to oppose and it’s easy to see some value in his price despite being favourite.
Judd Trump will be one to watch in this year’s tournament. Despite not being on top of his game going into this tournament he’s a player who will rise to the occasion. The electric atmosphere generated in the crucible could be enough to inspire the talented Trump.
Another player who you’d expect to be taking their place in the latter stages of the tournament is “the jester from Leicester” Mark Selby. A consistent performer coming back into form with a good recent performance at the China Open Selby has all the attributes to have a successful tournament.
Our final choice is Neil Robertson. The Aussie enters in absolutely blistering form and is second favourite to scoop the win. His record in the last 7 ranked tournaments is perfect for those looking for a stats based selection in the tournament as he has placed in the semi-finals in 6 of those. Interestingly dutching the four players highlighted in this article returns a profit should any of them take the title.
